Chasing the Dream - First Sailboat

The Sailing Bug started early for me. I was in the 7th Grade when my family moved from the suburbs of Flint, MI to Lake Fenton, MI. Every day I woke up to the view of the water. It wasn't long before I was mowing lawns to earn enough to purchase my first Sailboat, a "Scamper". The hull was made of plastic which encased styrofoam. It had a wood Dagger Board, a wood retractable Rudder and was similar in size to the Sunfish for half the price.
Throw on a life jacket, hoist the small sail, freedom was soon to be had. Lake Fenton was about 8 miles long and 1 mile wide with an island in the middle. There were several peninsulas for which we lived on one. This peninsula was reached by a one lane dirt road, we lived third house from the end.
I spent many summers sailing up and down that lake. It didn't matter what the weather was. I was having fun, scaring my mother with my shenanigans, like turtling my boat and generally getting wet.
